I received this product as part of a review program in return for an unbiased review.
I have used inkjet and laserjet printers before, both from HP and other manufacturers, so was curious as to what this printer would offer, apart from a compact footprint.
It is indeed small, at 198x360x264mm and weighing 5.4kg. The only ports are the power socket and a USB-B and it has a minimal display.
Getting it out the box was not easy. I understand they are packed to avoid damage, but the packaging was so snug, I had to turn it upside down and gently shake to get the printer out!
The toner was easy to install and setup was easy enough to follow, but you do wave to set it up with the USB cable – you can't set it up on Wifi, which seemed a shame.
The Wifi is only single channel at 2.4GHz and supports b/g/n.
Printing is easy enough through the PC and the HP Smart app was easy to install and use. However, you cannot select double sided printing on the app, only via PC.
The print quality is excellent (like most laserjets) with text clear and photos of a good resolution.
It is very quiet when printing and fairly fast, although not that much faster than my inkjet printer.
In fact, I compared it with two other printers: my Epson inkjet and a HP inkjet. There isn't that much difference between the Epson, but it is markedly faster than the HP inkjet.
Copying and scanning, again, are simple and can be done via the app, PC or on the front panel. The quality is slightly reduced from the original, but no worse than other printers.
The three main drawbacks with this printer are:
a) There is no feeder, so copying and scanning have to be done one page at a time, on the scanner bed.
b) Although it will support double sided printing, you have to print one side and then turn the pages over and feed them back through for the other side.
c) It is only black and white.
I understand these choices are to keep the size of the printer down, but it led me to the question I kept coming back to; To whom is this aimed at?
It seems that if you are a small office or home user, you would really want something with colour and if you were a big office user, you would want a printer that had the feeder and auto double sided printing.
Other than that I would say it currently costs £80-£120 for the printer and £50 for the toner, but to be honest, unless you want the clarity, stick with an inkjet.
Overall, the more I used this printer, the less impressed I was with it.
