Why is Epson ink so expensive?

The cost of your Epson ink, depends on the Epson Inkjet printer model you have. Epson formulates these inks specifically for each printer to ensure quality prints and reliability.

Epson now offers the EcoTank series of printers, which use ink bottles. These ink bottles are relatively cheap and high in capacity, making the EcoTank economical to run. View our EcoTank series printers here

How to change ink on Epson printers?

Most of the time the easiest way to change your Epson inks is by following the instructions in your user guide, which is usually delivered with your new Epson printer. This can also be downloaded from the Epson support website. Alternatively, follow the simple steps in our guide below to change your ink cartridges for your Epson printer.

 1. Make sure your Epson printer is turned on and lift up the scanner unit.

 2. Press the “stop” button on the printer to move the print head moves to the replacement position.

 3. Press the release tab on the Epson ink cartridge you want to replace to unclip it, then remove the ink cartridge.

 4. Insert the new Epson printer ink cartridges into the corresponding holder and push until it clicks into place.

 5. Close the scanner lid and press the “stop” button.

 6. The print head moves back to the printing position and you should be ready to use your printer.

How to check printer ink levels on Epson?

To check the ink levels on an Epson printer, there are a few methods.

From a Windows computer, there are two ways.

 • In the printer driver:

 1. Open the “Printer” shortcut from Windows Taskbar

 2. Open the “Epson Printer Driver”, click "Maintenance" and click "EPSON Status Monitor 3"

 3. Approximate ink levels will be shown in a new window.


 • A progress meter appears automatically when you start a print job which will show approximate ink levels.


 • From a Mac computer:

 1. In the Apple Menu or Dock, go to System Preferences.

 2. Select “Print & Fax”, “Print & Scan” or “Printers & Scanners”, and select your product.

 3. Then select Options & Supplies then Utility.

 4. Select Epson Status Monitor.

 5. Approximate ink levels will be shown in a new window.

How to print with black ink only when the colour is empty Epson?

Printing in black ink only when your colour inks are empty is not possible on all Epson printers. This is a feature called “Black Print Mode”, and the instructions may vary depending on your Epson printer model. The steps outlined in our guide below should work for most Epson printers.

To print in black ink only, on Windows:

 1. If your colour printer ink is empty before starting the print run, a message will appear to “cancel print” or “print in black” 

 2. Click “print in black”


If your colour ink runs out during a print run a message appears to “replace cartridge” “stop” or “close” 

To continue printing in black do the following

 1. Click “stop”

 2. Check your print settings in the printer driver.

 3. Make sure your print settings for the “Black Print Mode” matches the following driver options.

 • Plain Paper

 • Black/Greyscale

 • Borders
