The Dymo LabelWriter 5XL is Dymo’s latest shipping label printer on the market to replace the ageing LabelWriter 4XL. The LabelWriter 5XL includes a few significant upgrades such as network connectivity, on/off button and an easier way to print and ship for ecommerce and shipping carriers. But, do these new changes warrant the upgrade?

Dymo LabelWriter 5XL And 4XL Label Printer Differences

There are a few key differences between the Dymo label printers.

Connectivity

The Dymo 5XL label printer features a USB and Ethernet interface for connectivity. Having an Ethernet addition is handy for connecting to your wireless network via cable. Whereas the Dymo 4XL only features USB connectivity.

Label Counter And Automatic Label Recognition

New In The Dymo 5XL label printer is a Label Counter and Automatic Label Recognition which was absent with the Dymo 4XL. This now shows how many labels remain on the spool when using the latest Dymo labels.

eCommerce Support

The Dymo 5XL label printer is perfect for eCommerce sellers, and printing 4”x 6” shipping labels for UPS, FedEx, USPS directly from eBay, Amazon, Etsy, and many others are integrated out of the box. This is not the case with the Dymo 4XL label printer.

New Button Layout, Power Button and Power Saving Mode

The Dymo 5XL label printer has three front-facing buttons, from left to right these are Reverse Feed, a Power Button and Forward Feed. The Dymo 4XL has just one button on the front.

With an added power button, you can now turn the printer On and Off. This is not the case with the Dymo 4XL.

There’s also a new power-saving mode, which is activated after 5 minutes of inactivity, indicated by a dim blue power status light. Power saving mode for the Dymo 4XL is activated after 30 seconds of inactivity.

Label Roll Spool

The label roll spool for the  Dymo 5XL label printer sits inside the base of the printer, making it much easier to load labels than the Dymo 4XL which has the spool hanging from the inside of the top cover.

Label Roll Guide And Skew Correction

The Dymo 5XL label printer has a label guide to keeping smaller labels straight and inline to reduce skewed labels, label jams which often lead to distorted prints. This feature is not available on the Dymo 4XL.

What Are The Dymo LabelWriter 5XL New Features?

Automatic Label Recognition and Counter

Thanks to a microchip on the newer Authentic LabelWriter label rolls, the Dymo 5XL can automatically detect the current label roll size, type and colour currently installed.

Also, for the first time on a Dymo printer, you will know the exact number of remaining labels on a roll when printing. This information is displayed on the Dymo LabelWriter software. Meaning no more guessing and you should never unexpectedly run out of labels anymore.

Network And USB Connectivity

The Dymo 5XL label printer features Ethernet connectivity. This feature will allow you to connect to your wireless network via cable, to print from computers in your network.

Extensive eCommerce Compatibility

The Dymo 5XL supports 6×4″ shipping labels and can seamlessly print the correct labels direct from most popular most popular couriers such as UPS, FedEx, USPS and eCommerce platforms including Amazon, Etsy. eBay and many more through direct integrations and or third-party software integration.

A huge shift in eCommerce online over the past year means Shipping, Inventory and Barcode printing are becoming more and more vital.

New Button Layout

The Dymo 5XL now has a single button to turn it on and off. Forward and reverse buttons have also been included to release/rewind the roll helping clear jams,

Which Label Rolls are Compatible With Dymo LabelWriter 5XL?

Can The Dymo LabelWriter 5XL Use Labels From The LabelWriter 4XL?

Yes, “Authentic” or “Genuine” Dymo 4XL labels can be used in the Dymo 5XL with no problems. But, older stock label rolls might not be fully recognised.

With regards to non-genuine labels, The answer is “No” they will not work in the Dymo 5XL.

Can Dymo LabelWriter 5XL Use Older Stock Dymo 4XL Labels?

Yes, labels designed for the Dymo 4XL will work with the Dymo 5XL.

If the rolls do not have the chip installed the label recognition and roll counter will not function. Old stock labels without a chip come in a blue box, rather than the current green.

If you encounter the “Unknown Label Detected” error message whiles using an older Genuine Dymo 4XL or previous generation Genuine Dymo LabelWriter Labels, contact DYMO customer care either via phone or live chat and they’ll be happy to replace those labels for you.

Can I Use Royal Mail Supplied Labels With Dymo 5XL?

No, Royal Mail provided labels cannot be used in the Dymo LabelWriter 4 or 5XL. Because these PPL (Printer Postage Labels) are made on a larger spool and are only compatible with specific printers.

Can I Print Royal Mail Click And Drop Labels on Dymo LabelWriter 5XL?

Yes, the Dymo 5XL is compatible with Royal Mail Click and Drop software. The Dymo S0904980 6×4″ shipping label roll is what you will need to make 6×4″ labels. Please visit Dymo LabelWriter Label Rolls page to view the entire label range.
