Ricoh’s PFU division has launched ScanSnap Camera, a free feature inside the ScanSnap Home Mobile app that lets anyone digitise paper using nothing but a phone. It went live on 14th July 2026, and unlike the rest of the ScanSnap range, you don’t need to own a scanner to use it.
That’s a notable shift. ScanSnap has built its reputation on dedicated desktop hardware, the iX2500, iX1600, iX1300 and so on. ScanSnap Camera opens the same image processing technology up to anyone with a smartphone and the app, free of charge.
What ScanSnap Camera Actually Does
Point your phone’s camera at a document and ScanSnap Camera does the rest. It automatically crops the image to the edges of the page, corrects the rotation, straightens out any skew, and removes the background clutter around the document. Colour detection runs automatically too, so a black-and-white letter doesn’t come out looking washed out or oddly tinted.
All of this runs on the same image processing engine built into ScanSnap’s hardware scanners, so the results are sharper and more consistent than a standard camera photo. Once captured, the app runs OCR (optical character recognition) and converts the image into a searchable PDF automatically, no extra step required.
How to Scan a Document With ScanSnap Camera
The process takes seconds once you’re set up:
- Open ScanSnap Home Mobile and sign in to your ScanSnap account.
- Tap the camera icon on the Scan screen.
- Choose automatic or manual photo-taking mode.
- Lay the document flat, hold the phone parallel to it, and keep the whole page inside the frame.
- In automatic mode, hold the camera steady and it captures the shot itself. In manual mode, tap the shutter button.
- Review the thumbnail, then reorder, rotate or refine the scan on the preview screen if needed.
- Tap Finish to save.
You can capture up to 100 pages in a single session, which makes it practical for anything from a single receipt to a small stack of paperwork.
What You Can Digitise With It
ScanSnap Camera handles the same range of document types the hardware scanners are known for: receipts, business cards, handwritten notes, contracts and photos. Finished files can be saved directly to the phone or sent to a preferred cloud service through ScanSnap Cloud, and existing ScanSnap scanner owners can route camera scans into the same cloud folders they already use for their scanner.
Every saved file gets a searchable name, so tracking down a specific receipt or contract later means searching rather than scrolling through a folder of “IMG_”-prefixed photos.
ScanSnap Camera vs ScanSnap Go: Don’t Mix Them Up
PFU released two smartphone-related ScanSnap features within months of each other, and it’s easy to confuse them.
ScanSnap Go arrived in February 2026 and works only with the ScanSnap iX2500. It lets you hold your phone near the scanner to temporarily load your personal scan settings onto its touchscreen, useful in hot-desking offices or shared workspaces where several people use the same physical unit. You still need the iX2500 hardware. ScanSnap Go just personalises it on the fly.
ScanSnap Camera is a completely different tool. It needs no scanner at all. Your phone’s camera does the capturing, and the app’s software does the correcting. The two features share the same ScanSnap Home Mobile app but solve different problems: one personalises a shared scanner, the other replaces the scanner entirely for casual use.
Do You Still Need a ScanSnap Scanner?
For the odd receipt or a single-page contract, ScanSnap Camera is genuinely useful and free. For anything beyond light, occasional use, a dedicated scanner still wins.
