If you’re looking for a professional photo printer, the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO series has always been a top choice. For nearly a decade, the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 was the top contender. Which was known for its exceptional print quality, advanced features, and reliable performance. However, it’s now been discontinued and replaced by the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100.
But does the PRO-1100 live up to its reputation?
In this blog, we provide an in-depth Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 vs PRO-1000 comparison so that you can easily evaluate the new model against the old and decide if this is a must-have printer for your needs.
Differences Between The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 and the Pro-1000 Printer
On the outside, the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 looks and weighs exactly the same as its predecessor, the PRO-1000. However, inside, this new model introduces significant upgrades to boost its performance.
The new Pro-1100 has improved on all possible levels. With a huge boost in print quality thanks to updating to new inks (LUCIA PRO II) with a Chroma Optimiser for smoother reflections. However, using these new inks also improves the longevity of the print, being able to last up to 200 years and features wax-infused ink, giving further scratch resistance. Plus, 7 more supported paper sizes, including 4 additional sizes for borderless prints.
What could be most exciting is the increased length for panoramic prints. Where the Pro-1000 had an impressive 3.94ft maximum, the new Canon Pro-1100 can print panoramic pictures almost three times as long, with a maximum length of 10.75 ft.
Canon Professional Print + Layout Updates
Another new update to go alongside the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 is the new changes to Canon’s Professional Print and Layout software. These include some great new features to enhance the quality of your prints.
- HDR Print: Utilize the broader dynamic range of RAW images to produce prints with enhanced highlights and accurate colour representation.
- DPRAW (Dual Pixel) Print: Takes map data from DPRAW files exclusive to certain Canon DSLR cameras to sharpen the focussed areas of your photos to add depth and texture to your images.
- ICC Profile Support: Allows you to select specific ICC profiles ensuring your final prints match the image you see on screen prior to printing.
These features, combined with PRO-1100’s updated 12-colour pigment ink system, and wide support of media types make it a powerful tool for professional photographers and artists who need the best in print quality.
New Inks
Refining the printer also includes refining the inks, the new LUCIA PRO II pigment-ink system brings even more accurate colour reproduction and longevity. Using these 12 new inks gives prints a much longer lifespan, Canon has quoted these to be Archival for up to 200 years! (60 years longer than the inks found in the Canon IMAGEPROGRAF PRO-1000)
Plus, the new LUCIA PRO II inks are wax-infused, which improves abrasion resistance on glossy media. This, alongside the new formulation of pigment inks, will make a huge difference in the longevity of your prints.
Black And White Print Mode
A new black-and-white print mode has been added to the drivers, this only uses the grey and black inks, to lower running costs and add the darkest, most accurate tones to your photos
Chroma Optimizer
Users now have the option to enable or disable the Chroma Optimizer (Transparent ink) on their prints, perfect for keeping a natural page texture or lacing the prints.

Additional Paper Sizes
Compared to the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000, the new PRO-1100 includes 7 new paper sizes to its regular printing sizes and 4 additional borderless print sizes.
The new regular sizes are:
7×10, 9×13, 11×14, 13×19, 16×20, 17×25, 12×12
The new borderless sizes are:
B4, Legal (8.5×14), 13×19, 17×26
One of the biggest updates to the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 is the increase in lengths for roll paper printing. The older Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 was able to print lengths up to 3.9 ft. In comparison, the new PRO-1100 can reach huge lengths of 10.75 ft.
Performance Differences
The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 enhances black-and-white prints with its updated matte black ink, delivering deeper, richer blacks. While the print speeds match the PRO-1000, the new ink formulation significantly improves overall black density, especially in monochrome prints.
This is achieved through a higher pigment density, increased surface coverage, and a low-reflective formula, resulting in exceptional contrast and clarity.
Beyond the black and grey tones, the PRO-1100 also includes an advanced colour-matching table, dramatically enhancing colour reproduction in dark blue areas for even more accurate and vibrant prints.
Verdict
At first glance, the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1100 looks identical to the PRO-1000 in design, size and weight. However, the real difference lies inside – making it a worthwhile upgrade for professional photographers or artists.
With an extended panoramic print length of up to 10.75 feet, improved inks and enhanced colour gradation, the PRO-1100 delivers superior print quality and versatility.
