Mechanical engineer Anjan Contractor received a $125,000 grant from the agency to build a prototype 3D printer, with hopes that it could provide food for astronauts during long-distance space travel.

Using “ink” made from small fragments of silicone chips that are no larger than a grain of sand, Xerox’s ‘Palo Alto Research Center’ [PARC] are hoping to one day use laser printers to create create desktop manufacturing plants that use chiplets to “print” the circuitry for a wide array of electronic devices.

This idea could potentially take 3D printing onto the next level before its initial capabilities – some of which can still be considered as “potential” themselves – have even been realised.  For example, not only could the structure of a product be printed, but also the electronic functionality that goes with it.

Eugene Chow, the PARC electrical engineer, whose team developed this new technology,  known as “xerographic micro-assembly” told Markoff that the “crazy new revolutionary tool” prints silicon “chiplets” onto a surface.

Researchers have yet to scale this technique onto a larger scale, though the often-mentioned “potential” is most certainly there.

The one-time photography giant has been selling off various sections of their vast business recently, though this sale of one of Kodak’s more familiar cornerstones will resonate further.

However, this time, ink has been swapped for fire! Lucien Langton, a 25-year-old student, has built a fully-functioning printer for wood that uses fire.

Named the FireWriter, it operates on the same principle as the old dot matrix printers – laying out an image dot by dot and line by line. Langton has used a repurposed inkjet printer controlled with Arduino Uno, a calibration module equipped with an optical sensor and fitted with a Dremel torch loaded with a mixture of butane and propane that burns at up to 1200 degrees Celsius.

Speaking about his project, Langton said: “FireWriter is a machine using contemporary rapid prototyping electronics combined with humanity’s first technology: fire.

“The purpose is to propose a dialogue between image reproduction and its destruction. Inevitably, alterations of the support are linked with alteration of aesthetics. The result offers aspects of engraving with a mechanical/pixelised pattern.”

According to ConsumerReports.org, their lab experts have recommended that you leave your printer in standby mode instead of turning it off when you are finished with it.

Christi Hansen said she wore the ring every day for 13 years until the carat marquis diamond disappeared.

After searching high and low for the jewel, Hansen eventually gave up, with her husband buying her a replacement ring.

However, when Wayne Sutton, a technician, was working on Hansen’s old work printer years later, he noticed something caught inside the machine.

We are delighted to announce the Printerbase prize draw winner for December: Rev. Andy Sinclair!

Andy landed himself a fantastic slimline 32″ television all for simply leaving an honest review of his latest purchase from Printerbase – a perfect late Christmas present!

Windows 8 Compatible Printers & Printer Drivers
Since the release of Microsoft Windows 8 we have had a number of enquiries from people asking if a printer or multifunction is compatible with Windows 8.

The quick answer is that most of the newer printers are compatible with Windows 8. New machines usually have built-in drivers that support Windows 8 and will enable you to use the printer’s basic functions.
Microsoft has a website that will enable you to find out if the printer you want to buy (obviously from Printerbase) is compatible with Windows 8. I have searched for some of our most popular printers and they all come up as compatible due to the ‘built-in drivers’. Printers come with two drivers - built-in drivers and manufacturer original drivers. If available I recommend that you download the latest manufacturer drivers because they will give you full access to all the printer’s features.

During the month of November men sprout moustaches in the UK and around the world. The rules are simple; each ‘Mo Bro’ must grow and groom a moustache. We have had fun in our office joking about shaving, how young we look and the type of moustaches we want to grow. Some have taken photos and plan on taking photos every day and creating an animated timeline showing from clean shaven to a well groomed moustache.

But the main reason behind all of this is to create awareness for men’s health. Just talking to the guys in our office I realised like a large proportion of men we can be nonchalant or disinterested in health issues.

I cannot speak for all men but based on general conversations the main reasons I have heard for not showing more of an interest are that they are embarrassed to talk about health issues, too busy and the general attitude of ‘if it’s not hanging off, turning green or I can’t bandage, sew or gaffer-tape it back on, I’ll see a doctor’. But the issues are serious and we strongly believe we should take more of an interest that is why we are taking part.

I’ve tried to research this but couldn’t find anything that said this was Epson’s idea with the pictures, so maybe it was just coincidence.

I think with online shopping the pictures are less useful because the majority of times if you need new ink you are going to be searching the internet sat next to your Epson printer but nevertheless we thought we would try to bring all the images together and allow you to search for the inks by the picture. It’s replacement is the Brother HL-5450DN and we have these in stock now.

The models are very similar with the HL-5450DN offering some improvements with a faster 38ppm print speed and an increased memory of 64MB, the colour of the machine has been changed to an all black finish and as usual the new machine takes different toners to the old machine, however the running costs are very similar.

Brothers’ range of HL-53 machines we all be soon replaced by the HL-54 range, so if you have existing HL-53 machines and you want to add machines you need to buy now before they are all gone.

The new Kyocera range consists of the FS-2100D, FS2100DN, FS-4100DN, FS-4200DN and finally the FS-4300DN. These printers boast both impressive features and functionality making them the ideal office partner. The reliability of Kyocera machines is renowned within the industry and so is their running costs, and these new machines are no exception.

Toners range from 12,500 pages to 25,000 pages giving you some of the lowest running costs on the market.

Recently the guys over at PC Pro held their annual excellence awards. These awards highlight the products and manufacturers that more than 11,000 of the magazines dedicated subscribers voted as deserving your custom.

Now obviously, with printers being our speciality, the two categories out of the eighteen that had us interested the most were those of the inkjet and laser printers.

So what were the results?

Inkjets

Well, as expected Brother ranked highly in the inkjet category with an overall rating of 85% being voted as the best value inkjet printer available. Canon headed the field with an impressive 86% overall rating with customers citing the fantastic print quality and reliability as Canon’s main attributes and the main reasons why they deserved the number 1 spot.

Lasers

The laser category was a closer fought affair with only 6% separating the top 8 manufacturers. At the bottom of the table were Xerox, Dell, Canon and Lexmark. These manufacturers all received respectable results in their own right, with some receiving scores that would’ve been enough to win most other categories. At the top of the table, OKI, Samsung and Brother battled it out for pole position with OKI just edging in front of Samsung for the crown. Receiving scores of 97% for print quality and 91% for reliability, they took the win an overall score of 91%.

The media available ranged from the humble CD sleeve to door hangers and gift boxes. This media, coupled together with the readily available downloadable templates, meant producing fantastic results quickly could not be easier. Throughout the day, each member of our team were tasked to design their own T-shirt which were then turned into reality via OKI’s special T-shirt printing media.
