AirPrint will enable iPad, iPod Touch (3rd generation onwards) and iPhone customers using software release iOS 4.2 to print wirelessly from select apps – no set up or downloads required. According to Apple, customers will be able to automatically find a printer on their wireless network and print to it with one touch.

HP are the first to publicly announce their support for Apple’s new AirPrint technology in their existing and upcoming ePrint enabled printers. We hope more manufacturers will support AirPrint in the upcoming months.

Apple have also said in a statement announcing the release of AirPrint beta to developers by Philip Schiller (Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing) that customers with existing printers will also benefit from AirPrint. According to Apple, ANY printer shared via PC or MAC over a WiFi network will work.

AirPrint has only just been officially released to end users so we’re cautiously keeping an eye on this feature and will post any updates as they transpire.

Update (21/02/2011):
So, 3 months on we’ve decided to reassess Apple’s AirPrint technology to see how things have progressed. Unfortunately, Apple and HP may have some kind of special agreement because currently only HP machines work natively with AirPrint (17 machines and counting). Apple has said that compatibility will eventually extend to machines from other manufacturers.

Not all is lost because there are official and third-party Apps that will give users the same set of features without having HP forced onto them.

There are loads of free and commercial apps available so rather than list them here we’d recommend contacting us if no official app is available.

Use AirPrint on any machine:

If you want to use Apple’s AirPrint interface but don’t have a HP compatible machine there is another option. Simply install the printer onto either your Windows or Mac PC and then share the printer over your WiFi network - you may be required to install an app onto the PC/Mac for this to work. Again, for further help and advise please get in touch.

Update (17/06/2011):
Several months on and we’re disappointed to report that Apple’s AirPrint technology is still only exclusively incorporated into HP machines. We mentioned third party applications that will give you similar features but to clarify this further:

With AirPrint you can only print from apps that have a print option within their standard features. According to HP, these apps are AirPrint compliant:

So, even with AirPrint Apple haven’t managed to release an operating system that gives users the freedom to print from any application from any printer they wish.

Furthermore, the third party applications will only allow users to print from their photo albums. To print from AirPrint compliant apps, users are forced into purchasing an AirPrint compliant HP printer or sharing the machine via a PC or Mac over their WiFi network.

Update (26/09/2011):Canon have announced that they too will now begin to support Apple’s AirPrint technology in a selection of wireless inkjet machines. For now, they are limited to the new PIXMA MG8220, MG6220, and MG5320 Wireless Photo All-In-One inkjet printers but we hope more will be made available soon.

Workaround

If you need to print from an Apple app that is not AirPrint compliant (or you’re using a third party print app) simply press the home button and wake/sleep button at the same time on the Apple device to take a screenshot. This will automatically save a photo of what is displayed onscreen. You’re then able to navigate into your photo album and print the screenshot.

Update (27/10/2011):

More printers and multifunction devices are slowly becoming available from HP, Canon, Epson, Lexmark, Brother and others. I’ll provide the official link again but please note, there are a few not listed so it’s worth giving us a call: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356

You may notice that most AirPrint compatible printers/MFP’s are inkjet. This is due to manufacturers expecting most people to print from iPads in their home rather than place of work. The new Canon MG2150 and MG3150 colour multifunction inkjet machines are designed with home users in mind. They may be cheap but Canon have still included the essential features you’d come to expect, such as photo printing, high resolution scanning and copy functionality.

Dell are the new kings of cool thanks to their excellent 5230dn mono laser printer. Dell’s quoted print speed of 43ppm is no sweat according to PC Pro, since in their tests the machine managed a remarkable 44ppm using the 2400IQ print resolution setting! As with most printers, selecting the top resolution (1200dpi resolution setting) does bring the print speed down but PC Pro felt that the print quality in the 2400IQ was clean and sharp so didn’t see a reason to use the higher resolution setting.

The good news doesn’t end there. They liked how the Dell 5230dn machine accepted an extra three 550-sheet drawers, an envelope feeder and a 2,000-sheet feeder. If you purchase the Dell 5230dn, PC Pro does advise that users opt for the 21,000 page toner cartridge to get the very best running cost. This goes without saying but they do point out that the lower yield toners are particularly expensive per page.

PC Pro also pointed out that other accessories are available and the level of advanced security available makes this machine suitable for even the most demanding user. In fact, they tell us that the Dell 5230dn is their “new favourite network laser printer”.

The Xerox Phaser 7500 machine has fantastic print quality and handles paper exceptionally well. Build quality is second to none and it’s brilliant design means very little maintenance is required. Toners and other consumables are very easy to replace and clearing any paper jams is extremely simple (although we’ve not actually had one so far).

PagePack is where Xerox really outshines the competition. If you’re looking for a printer to primarily print high coverage A3 sheets then expect to go through dozens of toners, imaging units, fuser units… However, if you opt for PagePack there’s no need to worry because you could pay as little as 6.6p per page regardless of toner coverage! All consumables are included plus full manufacturer onsite support for that one low cost per page. That’s the reason our Phaser 7500 is on PagePack.

That’s right, Samsung have reached their 20th year within the printer market and we’d like to wish them a Happy Birthday.

Samsung joined the printer arena relatively late but have quickly caught up (and in many respects overtaken) and now produce an extremely impressive range of both printers and multifunction machines. Unlike most other printer manufacturers, Samsung develop their own machines from the ground up, manufacturing all the electrical components themselves (such as RAM and processor), which gives them a distinct advantage. For instance, they are the first manufacturer to incorporate dual core processors into some of their range, allowing them to completely wipe the floor with the competition.

For the Samsung enthusiasts out there it should be noted that Samsung have a policy of not rebadging any other manufacturer’s products so if you buy a Samsung, you know you’re actually getting a Samsung. Interestingly, if you buy a Dell, Ricoh or Xerox machine there is a good chance you could in fact be buying a Samsung, which isn’t a bad thing!

My report is simple the three “Q’s”…Quick-Quiet-Quality.
The machine is most impressive for its tiny size. It is very easy to load the consumables-the office junior would have no trouble in clicking a cartridge and the 150 sheet paper magazine is a perfect quantity for a small run. Print quality is excellent and as a keen photographer, this is a most important part of my assimilation of the machine. All in all, a good buy for he smaller office or home use perhaps ideal for the Golf Club secretary!

Upon receiving the Xerox 6010 Phaser, we were firstly surprised at the ease of setup.  Basically we just plugged it in, connected it to the computer and the setup CD did everything for us with a series of icons that we just clicked on.  The printer itself is also very compact and doesn’t take up a lot of room so will fit in to the smallest of corners and the paper feed is located at the bottom front so you haven’t got paper hanging out of the back (Which was a problem on our previous printer). 
The Xerox is also remarkably easy to use.  With a single LCD screen and a circular navigation button system on the top, everything is grouped together with no complicated Menu or settings to fiddle with, just straightforward and that simple to use, even we could do it!!
The paper feed tray holds an impressive 150 sheets of paper and also has a separate manual feed, which makes life easier.  The printer is very quiet whilst working especially compared to our old one, which was really noisy in comparison (Epson R300), and the print speed is very quick.  We use this printer mostly to print Certificates for our Karate Club and related paperwork.  We have just had a Belt Grading at the club and used this printer for the Student’s Certificates etc and it performed flawlessly, saving us a HUGE amount of time in comparison to our old printer due to the Xerox’s print speed.  The certificates have never looked so good!  The black text printed solid and the colours were very bright and clean and looked very professional. 

The Images we printed were very vivid and sharp and the Xerox printed everything EXACTLY as it appeared on the screen.  In our opinion, the print quality of the Xerox would rival any High Street Commercial printing service.
We would deem this printer PERFECT for a Karate Club, or any other club or organisation, which requires Certificates printing or similar. 
All in all, the Phaser is quiet, compact, delivers unrivalled quality prints, is simple to use and has a very impressive print speed.  We are VERY happy with the 6010 and would recommend it without hesitation to everyone who is considering buying one!!

The Xerox Phaser 6010 promised to be the perfect small office printer and we were delighted to receive it the other day. We were a bit anxious at first as the box it came in was quite large. However, we were pleased to find the printer itself was small and compact and did not take up much desk space. The instructions were very clear. We only use Apple Macs in our office and installing the software from the disk was extremely easy as it usually is for a Mac system. Obtaining the printer’s IP address to connect to our network was also very straightforward and the process was easy to follow and carry out. It took about 15 minutes from unpacking, setting up the printer and printing out the first copy – basically ‘plug and play straight out of the box!’

The print quality was very good with crisp clear black text, well-balanced colours that were slightly on the ‘vivid side’ but we much prefer this than to have dark, muddy colours. Colours in the images themselves were very natural and were much better than our larger Xerox Phaser 7400DN printer, which we normally use for printing our designs and layouts. On top of all this, the printer is very quiet and smooth in operation and copies print quickly well within the timescales claimed by the manufacturer. We have had printers in the past that were extremely noisy and vibrated when waking up from Sleep Mode or printing. The only criticism I would have would be that the Paper Tray fittings feel a bit flimsy and could easily break if someone knocked the tray by accident. In summary, the Xerox Phaser 6010 is an excellent, versatile, compact colour printer and is perfect for the small studio or office for general everyday printing.

The first piece of advice is to concentrate your efforts in the right place. By identifying which company activity has the greatest environmental impact, you can channel your energy and resources into making changes where they will make the greatest difference.

Strategies for Sustainability
Options for increasing the sustainability of printed communications can be placed into four areas. Firstly planning – consider whether an email or other web-based or emarketing solutions can used. Printerbase gives all of its customers a choice between traditional printed or PDF invoices.  It may be easier if short messages are sent in a digital communication and only bigger communications sent in print.

Secondly, you can become more sustainable by using your data more efficiently only sending relevant data to the right stakeholder, therefore reducing wastage. Design – Communications are designed for maximum impact but you can also but and environmental focus unto the design process. For example using ‘Eco-fonts’ which put less ink on a page or reduce the amount of block colour and try using recycled paper.
Communicate the fact you consider sustainability an issue for example say ‘printed on recycle paper using eco-font’ or ad logos to show you comply with recognised environmental standards.

Printing – Print only what you need and use green software to limited unwanted prints.  Also, use the features that are offered by your printer for example with Draft and Toner Save mode you can limit your toner usage. Using less toner on each page can extend your cartridge life, significantly reducing the frequency of replacing toner.

Duplex printing is a feature that allows automatic printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. Reduce the amount of paper used within the office by up to 50% with double-sided printing.

10 tips for better Environmental printing

1. Only print what you need – do you really need a printed copy of that document? Did you thoroughly check the electronic version over, so you do not need to print a new copy to fix mistakes.
2. Save as a PDF instead of printing to paper – Email a PDF instead of printing and then faxing or posting a paper copy.
3. Always use the manufacturer’s original consumables, as these can be sent back as part of their recycling programmes and guarantee the best quality prints for your machine.
4. Print on both sides of the sheet – If your printer has Duplex (double-sided) printing capabilities, then is sure to use it when printing multiple-page documents. This will cut your paper usage in half and significantly reduce your Carbon footprint.
5. Use ENERGY STAR rated machines – Products that have been rated with the ENERGY STAR label will those that can save you money while decreasing the impact they can have on the environment.
6. Use the correct driver settings for your machine – Save toner by using your printer’s Draft or Mono-Only mode for all non-important printed documents. Printing text-heavy documents that are set in Times New Roman or Century Gothic have also been proven to use less toner, and thus reduce consumption and save you more money.
7. Use high-yield toner cartridges – Use fewer cartridges to print the same amount of pages – resulting in fewer materials used in their manufacture, less fuel to transport them, less CO2 emissions and less waste to recycle.
8. Never throwaway empty cartridges – Make use of your printer manufacturer’s toner recycling programs to dispose of spent toners responsibly, and use fewer raw materials in the making of new cartridges.
9. Use recycled and low-weight paper – Choose FSC or PEFC-certified recycled paper for your printing needs and lessen the environmental impact from its production.
10. Use your printer’s energy-saving features – Set your printer to switch to ‘Standby’ mode when not in use and drastically reduce its power consumption.

I’ve always been a fan of the OKI machines and when I saw their first foray into designing a small toner based colour A3 printer I was hugely impressed. We’ve had the original C8600 machine in our office since it was launched several years ago and I’m pleased to report that it’s still going strong. OKI’s revamped C800 series are a pleasure to use and their slight improvements to the physical design will be welcomed by existing C8600/C8800 users.

Let’s talk a bit about the review. The C801 machine on test did pretty well on the timed print speeds, although were slightly slower than OKI’s own rating. That could be because the document was a bit more complex than the test file they used but even with our file the speed was still very good. Just like you’d expect from an OKI, the print quality was excellent and the glossy finish enhances the prints further. I especially like how easy OKI make it to print banners, CD labels, business cards, booklets, etc with their free Template Manager software: http://www.okitraining.com/TM40/english/course.htm, which is very easy to use.

I’d like to see more manufacturers offer the same warranty provided by OKI -
3 years onsite (simple online registration required).

Samsung were the first manufacturer to design and built a small/lightweight colour laser printer that will fit nicely on anyone’s desk and when their first CLP-300 came out I was very impressed with what they had achieved. There have been a few tweeks along the way and their latest CLP-320 and CLP325 range are ideal for anyone short on space.

If you want a workhorse machine, I would recommend moving up the Samsung range for something with lower running costs and faster print speeds but for light use the CLP-320 CLP-325 are ideal. If you need advice please call our sales team on 0800 170 7234 or 0161 308 5800.

Our second best selling InkJet MFP in March was the Brother MFC-J415W, which is a great compact desktop MFP that will print, scan, copy and fax. This machine performed well and managed to keep up with its claimed print speed of 53ppm. The print quality produced good monochrome text and graphics. I particularly liked the locking 2nd paper tray, which stabilises the unit when connecting the 3 additional 550 sheet paper trays and 2000 sheet high capacity feeder.

This machine worked well under test conditions producing very good printed documents. The consumables are very easy to access and errors are easily diagnosed thanks to the intuitive LCD display.

The independent evaluation:
BLI conducted comparative tests of toner cartridges for use with the OKI C5900 colour LED printer. Cartridges tested included OKI’s own brand versus non-genuine consumables by MediaSciences, Katun, Xprint and Q Imaging. It should be noted that the non-genuine supplies in this particular evaluation are considered leaders in their field and there are many more non-genuine suppliers in the marketplace who fall far short of these.

Cartridge yield results:
According to the report OKI’s original toner cartridges delivered a higher average toner yield than the competitor cartridges across the CMYK range. The only exception to this was XPrint’s black cartridge, which managed to print an extra 43 pages. However, the report revealed that this was the result of the cartridge being overfilled by 9%! Overfilling the cartridges may give rise to toner flow and clumping problems as well as placing excessive stress on moving parts, such as the drums.

Reliability results:
When it comes to reliability OKI scored 100%. BLI noted several problems with the compatible cartridges, such as cartridge malfunctions, out-of-box failures, operation failures, toner leakage, drum and fuser flaws as well as printer malfunctions caused as a direct result of sub-standard cartridges. This limited test showed that Katun and Xprint had no apparent issues but Katun managed to refill the yellow cartridges with black toner and Xprint had a worrying variation in toner content levels suggesting a lack of credibility in consistency and quality control processes.

Print quality results:
Print quality is where the compatibles really fell short. BLI found that using OKI’s original toner produced better halftones, clearer text reproduction and more detailed and realistic photographic prints across the board. BLI looked at the gamut produced from each consumable and reported that OKI’s original toner was the most accurate and could produce the widest range of colours. It’s no surprise since OKI’s original toner powder has been developed and formulated specifically for their own printer hardware and software utilisation, whereas manufacturers of compatible and remanufactured toner powders tend to use them across different models (and in some cases different brands of product).

These two mono laser printers are aimed at the same type of end user. Lexmark claim a whopping 38ppm from their E360dn machine whereas Samsung claim just 35ppm from the ML-3710ND. This is the maximum possible print speed and does not take into account any processing time required. When printing the same page over and over it should achieve the manufacturer’s claim.

However, if you print complex multi-page documents, which requires the printer to process each page individually, the overall print speed will be determined by the printer’s processor and memory.

Xerox’s flagship office A4 colour laser printer was very impressive to watch. Considering the high print speed the Phaser 6360 is relatively small compared to some of the other machines on the market (take a look at our Dell 5130cdn Video). If you choose to buy the toners and other consumables as and when required the Xerox Phaser 6360 has very good running costs. However, for users wishing to print in volume (especially if you have high toner coverage) I would recommend taking a look at Xerox’s PagePack Scheme.

The ML-2525 mono laser printer uses exactly the same toner cartridge so is worth consideration. It’s only slightly more expensive, is 24ppm instead of 18ppm and is black rather than white.

Brother has launched a €10million advertising campaign to promote its range of compact A3 Inkjet printers to business users.
The advertising campaign launched in the UK in September 2010 and is appearing on television, online and in print, backed by PR.

They took 10 Inkjet Photo Printers and printed the same photograph on each machine, the photograph used was taken by Martin Brent(world renowned photographer), then Martin and Jon Bentley whittled the list down to 5 printers based on the best photo quality.

The top 5 printers were then put into order decided by the running cost, the top 5 were as follows:

The Gadget Shows no. 1 Photo Inkjet Printer was the Kodak ESP3250, they were more than happy with the print it produced but what really made it stand out was that the running costs were ”less than half the price of it’s nearest rival”.

Ok that is a very basic method of calculating TCO but for a more detailed TCO calculator contact us at Printerbase and we will compare the running costs of any printer you are going to purchase.
The general rule of thumb is the more expensive the printer the cheaper it will be to run. This is not necessarily the truth there are many factors that need to be considered but one thing we know through our experience is that a low-cost printer dosent stay low-cost for long. Following the release of Microsoft Windows 7 we are starting to get quite a few enquiries from people asking if a printer or multifunction printer is compatible with Windows 7.

Well the quick answer is that most of all the current printers we sell are compatible with Windows 7 with a download of the driver from the manufacturers website, however we have recently come across a few machines that are not compatible with Windows 7 and in particularly the 64bit version. If you can’t find information on your printer from the links below let us know and we will check the status for you.

Most manufacturers state that new printers will not ship with Windows 7 drivers in the box unitl 2010, so for the time being drivers will have to downloaded, which is not a bad thing as often the drivers supplied in box can be out of date with the latest version available online.

It is a different story for older printers and multifunctions, with manufacturers concentrating on getting drivers written for all their current models, the older models have been given less of priority but the drivers are slowly becoming available but it is possible they won’t supply drivers for all their previous machines.

July was a very busy month in terms of printer sales and these were the best sellers for the month:

Mono Laser Printers
Brother HL-5240L
A constant best seller for us, the HL-5240L is a great desktop printer for somebody looking for a good workhorse machine. It features USB & parallel interfaces, a 250 sheet paper tray, a resolution of 1200x1200dpi and a print speed of up to 24ppm. It also takes the same supplies as the Brother HL-52xx series, making it a good buy for people with existing Brother printers in that range.
Another reason for its popularity is that it is compatible with DOS printing.

OKI B410d
A close 2nd to the Brother is the OKI B410d which is probably down to the half price offer we currently have on it, was £121.00 now only £60.50 but only whilst stocks last.
Which is a great price for an A4 mono laser with automatic duplex printing, the rest of the specs are similar to the Brother but with a slightly faster print speed of 28ppm.

We don’t expect much to change this month and would imagine the best sellers in August will be the above two printers.

Colour Laser Printers
Xerox Phaser 6110n
A very compact entry level A4 colour laser printer at an incredible price, the Phaser 6110n features USB & network interfaces and has a print speed of 4ppm in colour and 12ppm in mono.

Xerox Phaser 6125
The next model up from the Phaser 6110, giving you faster print speed, lower running costs and excellent quality output. In fact the quality of the output from the Phaser 6125 actually put some of the higher priced colour lasers to shame.

However, in August we don’t expect the above two printers to feature at the top because there has been a price increase on the Phaser 6110 adding over £40 to the price and the Phaser 6125 had a special offer running on it with a free set of CMY toners which has now ended.

This month look out for the Xerox Phaser 6130 which is a very similar spec to the Phaser 6125 but has an offer of FREE CMY toners worth over £150 and also the Brother HL-4040CN which if you call us we will knock £100 off the web price whilst stocks last.

Multifunction Printers

Mono MFP
Samsung SCX-4828FN
The run away best seller has been the Samsung SCX-4828FN A4 mono laser printer, again probably mostly due to its half price offer making it only £149.99ex VAT whilst stocks last.
Which is a fantastic price as it Prints, Scans, Copies and Faxes, 1200x1200dpi, USB & network interfaces, it will scan to PC, network, email or USB and it also boasts duplex printing and duplex scanning/copying.

Samsung SCX-4824FN
Strangely the 2nd best selling mono MFP was the SCX-4824FN which is spec wise the model below the SCX-4828FN, very similar spec but it is slightly slower, doesn’t have the scan to to USB capability or duplex printing, scanning or copying.

Colour MFP
Brother MFC-6490CW
The best seller by a long way, the Brother MFC-6490CW is a wireless A3 inkjet multifunction which prints, scans and faxes. Its popularity is probably down to its low price, the fact it can scan and copy up to A3 size and the FREE 3 year warranty you can claim from Brother on it.

Brother DCP-6690CW
The 2nd best seller is another Brother A3 inkjet very similar to the MFC-6490CW but the main difference being no Fax function but it still has the FREE 3 year warranty that can be claimed from Brother.

In terms of best sellers the top 2 colour laser MFP’s were again two Brother machines:

Brother MFC-9840CDW
The top of the range Brother colour laser multifunction printer, features include Print, Scan, Copy & Fax, it has wireless, wired and USB interfaces, print speed is 20ppm in colour or mono and also has the capability to duplex print, scan and copy.

Brother MFC-9450CDN
Very similar spec to the MFC-9840CDW with the main differences being no wireless and no duplex scanning or copying but it does still duplex print.

Both the Brother colour laser MFP’s are part of our get £100 off the web price by calling us to buy offer but only whilst stocks last.

This month in terms of the multifunctions we might see a challenge coming from the Lexmark X342n A4 mono laser, which we are expecting to get in at a very good price. However, we expect that Brother will continue to dominate colour  multifunction sales for both laser and inkjet.
